Yoga blocks have long been used as versatile props in yoga practice. Used for everything from modifying poses on the mat to holding space, teaching, and assisting students in classes, yoga blocks are popular with yogis everywhere. But not all yoga blocks are created equal.
After preparing for the first ever Yoga Beach Retreat for the 2021 summer, I wanted to cobble together a set of top quality yoga blocks before I left town. I checked online and at my local yoga gear store. After much searching, I’ve compiled a list of the best yoga blocks on the market which I have used extensively on the beach in Carmel and can vouch for.
In my article, I have reviewed and ranked these yoga blocks based on the following criteria: quality, price, positioning, strength, versatility, and use. These are all the things we look for when considering buying a yoga block or whether we use a yoga block at all.
These are the yoga blocks I choose and the yoga blocks I would recommend.

2. JBM Yoga Block Plus Strap
- Good size – It is long enough to support deep stretching poses, yet it is also short enough to be able to grip properly.
- Quality – The strap and d-ring are durable and the cork material is nice to hold onto.
Non-toxic, Extra Long & Wide.
Not easily adjustable – The strap does not slide. The only options are to add or remove the provided elastic band that allows you to either pull it firmly together in one spot or to loosen it up to the point that you are not getting any support at all.
Uneven – I don't know if my block is defective or if this is just a factor of the design, but the block has a slight dip in it when it is laid on a level surface. If you place your hand on the block and slowly lower it, you can feel the dip. This might not be much of an issue if you are using it for a beginner, but could be a big deal if you are working out to intermediate or advanced yoga poses.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which type of yoga block is best?
There are lots of different types of yoga blocks out there. The most common are foam or cork, but there are others as well including ones made of rubber, banana leaf or even just slabs of wood. However, it’s really a matter of personal preference and what works best for you.
Foam and cork blocks are the best for absolute stability. While some believe that they offer the worst grip and traction, the reality is that they’re really the best for balance. They still offer lots of grip and traction, but just in a different way. The very best feature of foam yoga blocks is their protection against joint or bone damage. This is more of a concern if you’ve been practicing yoga for a while and are using deeper poses which place lots of pressure on your knees, elbows and wrists. Your joints will thank you for using blocks.
What size yoga block is best?
The most common block size is 6 inches and that’s the one that’s used in most classes. However, there are different block sizes for different-sized students. 8 or 10 inches for students over 5.5 feet tall, 4.5 to 5.5 for people 5 feet to 5.75 feet and 3.5 inches for shorter students or those with smaller hands. Depending on your class size you may need more than one block for the whole class. That means that bigger blocks will save you money in the long run.
I like the textured blocks better as they are easier on the skin, and are less likely to slip.
Are Yoga blocks worth it?
Yoga blocks are a great tool for adding stability and support during your yoga practice. They are ideal for poses where you balance on one leg or sit cross-legged on the floor. They can also improve your posture and build the strength needed to maintain poses for longer. The best yoga blocks are a must-have for your home yoga practice, especially if you have limited access to a dedicated studio.
What should you look for when choosing yoga blocks?
Are all yoga blocks the same?
Yoga blocks are a staple for many yoga classes. That’s why it’s important to know what makes a top grade block and what doesn’t.
Yoga blocks come in handy for so many people, but they aren't for everybody. Luckily, our yoga block reviews will help you figure out which yoga block is right for you. Yoga blocks are really helpful and they're not expensive.
